Houthis hit Riyadh airport twice as Saudi coalition promises response

23 sources

A Houthi strike on Riyadh's King Khalid airport on Saturday killed at least 12 and wounded more than 300, and a second attack followed on Sunday. The Saudi-led coalition promised a firm response, while airlines and regulators pull back.

Saudi authorities said the attack on Saturday, 10 October, the third on the airport in a week, killed 12 people, among them four Saudis and two Bangladeshis; a Jerusalem Post report puts the toll at 13. A further strike on Sunday killed a Pakistani national and injured 11, Saudi aviation authorities said. The Houthis claimed four attacks within 24 hours on the Riyadh and Dammam airports, a gas facility and an Aramco refinery, and warned airlines to avoid Saudi airports except Mecca and Medina. Their foreign ministry said "worse is yet to come" unless Riyadh stops its aggression.

Coalition vows retaliation

Coalition spokesman Turki Al-Maliki called the attack a "full-fledged war crime" and promised a firm response under international humanitarian law. Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV reported a strike on Sanaa airport, which Saudi Arabia had not commented on, and the Houthis claimed more than 120 Saudi air raids, which could not be verified. President Donald Trump said the US is considering joining Saudi strikes.

Airlines and regulators retreat

The FAA told US airlines on Sunday to exercise caution in Saudi airspace until 10 December. Riyadh airport stays closed to flights through at least 5 p.m. EDT Monday, and the UK embassy advises against all but essential travel to Jeddah, Dammam and all Saudi airports. Delta says safety will decide whether its Atlanta-Riyadh service starts on 23 October.
