Symbolic imageHurricane Simon nears Mexico's Pacific coast as evacuations continue
Category 4 Hurricane Simon moved offshore of Jalisco on Sunday as President Claudia Sheinbaum urged coastal residents to stay indoors. Whether it makes landfall was unclear.
In a post on X on Sunday, 11 October, Sheinbaum asked residents of coastal municipalities in Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacán to stay sheltered until authorities declare the danger over, and said preventive evacuations were continuing. Reported sustained winds range from 230 km/h (US National Hurricane Center, latest report) to 250 km/h (AP, via Politika). The NHC warns of life-threatening floods and landslides, with up to 76 cm of rain possible in parts of Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco until Monday. Al Jazeera names Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco as the town at greatest risk of a direct hit.
Alerts and closures
Civil protection put 28 municipalities in Jalisco and Colima on its highest cyclone alert and 93 more on high alert. Puerto Vallarta airport was closed temporarily and classes were suspended. Jalisco's governor Pablo Navarro warned of waves up to eight metres.
Damage in Acapulco
Telesur reports that the storm's outer bands already damaged Guerrero state: a two-story house collapsed in Acapulco's Ciudad Renacimiento, and about 500 National Guard personnel are clearing debris.
