Symbolic imageKyiv reports Russian strike on energy site after Trump announces energy ceasefire
Trump said on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to halt strikes on energy infrastructure immediately. Zelensky called it news to him, and Moscow has not commented.
Trump announced the ceasefire in a brief Truth Social post on Sunday, 11 October, without details: "Do not break it!" Zelensky first told Axios it was news to him, then said in his evening address that Ukraine is ready if Russia and the US agree. The presidential office says a Kharkiv power plant was hit after the post, and Foreign Minister Andrij Sybiha accused Russia of a clear violation. Handelsblatt notes that Trump made a similar claim in mid-September and both sides kept striking. Moscow had not responded by early Monday.
Pressure on Zelensky
On Saturday Trump said it was time for Ukraine to get a new president. Zelensky told ABC Ukraine would organize elections if Putin accepted a 60-day total ceasefire, and said Russia attacked 200 energy sites this week.
European backing
Macron said France backs an energy ceasefire but accused Russia of intensifying its attacks. Von der Leyen backed Zelensky's call for a ceasefire, and EU foreign ministers planned sanctions on nearly 1,600 further actors on Monday.
