Symbolic imageTrump calls for new Ukrainian president as Kyiv and Europe push back
US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Ukraine should get a new president. Kyiv rejected the call, and the Financial Times reports that Washington also threatens to block arms for Ukraine.
Trump said on Saturday, 10 October: "I think it is time for Ukraine to get a new president." He claimed Zelensky had many chances to end the war and never took them, and later added that Zelensky should hold elections. Foreign minister Andrij Sybiha answered on X that Zelensky has the support of the Ukrainian people, who have the right to decide, and that statements from abroad only confirm he is doing his job well. Russia kept shelling Kyiv into the evening, and mayor Vitali Klitschko reported eight injured, including a 15-year-old.
Arms threat and energy ceasefire
The Financial Times reports that the US threatens to block arms for Ukraine over its strikes on Russian refineries, and that US officials are lobbying European capitals and Kyiv after Trump's diesel deal with Putin. Trump also announced an energy ceasefire, which Kyiv called news to it and Moscow has not confirmed.
Europe backs Zelensky, elections conditional
According to the Financial Times, Trump's suggestion shocked Kyiv and European nations, and Ukraine's allies vow to pressure Moscow. Zelensky told ABC he would organize elections if Putin accepted a 60-day total ceasefire.
