Ukraine hits second Yandex data centre and disrupts Moscow air traffic

8 sources

Ukrainian drones knocked out several modules of a second Yandex data centre, in Kaluga, on Friday. Moscow's airports were restricted for hours as government planes returned from Turkmenistan.

Yandex said drones hit its largest data centre, in the Kaluga region, on Friday, 9 October, and it cannot say when the equipment will run again. A night earlier, a strike on its Sasovo centre in the Ryazan region caused a fire and shut it down. That site houses two of the three supercomputers used for Yandex's AI model, and Russian Railways, MegaFon and several media sites suffered outages. Yandex shares fell about 4 per cent. Zelensky said Kyiv "always responds in kind" to Russian strikes on Ukrainian data centres. Kaluga's governor said nine people were injured.

Moscow airports restricted

Restrictions at all Moscow airports lasted from about 3:40 p.m. to 6:40 p.m. on Friday. According to estimates cited by Meduza, more than 200 flights were delayed and over 100 cancelled. Several Il-96 government aircraft returning from a CIS summit in Turkmenistan circled, and one was diverted to St Petersburg. It is unclear which plane carried Putin.

Missile sites and refinery hit

Ukraine's General Staff said it struck three missile-production sites, including a component factory in the Tver region and an ICBM disassembly centre in the Nizhny Novgorod region, where the governor said one serviceman was killed. Zelensky said the Lukoil-owned Ukhta refinery was also hit.
