Symbolic imageCongo Ebola cases pass 8,700 as Kenya tightens border controls after first death
The WHO counts 8,728 confirmed Ebola cases and 4,205 deaths in DR Congo. Kenya is tightening border controls after its first death.
The WHO's latest situation report (data to 6 October) records 775 new confirmed cases and 379 deaths since 25 September, a case fatality rate of 48.2%. The virus reached the Alimbongo health zone in North Kivu and now affects 64 health zones in seven eastern provinces. The WHO calls transmission intense nationally but uneven, and says many deaths outside health facilities point to delayed detection and care.
Kenya's first case
Kenyan authorities reported on Tuesday, 6 October, the country's first case: a Kenyan citizen who had visited Congo and died in hospital. Handelsblatt reports that Kenya has since tightened border controls.
Warnings from the field
According to Telesur, Doctors Without Borders says the North Kivu outbreak is out of control, and the WHO warned that the Bundibugyo-strain outbreak could surpass West Africa's 2014 to 2016 epidemic, which killed more than 11,000 people.
Pledges and questions
Le Monde reports that donors have promised nearly $3 billion since mid-May, including a further $267 million from the US (announced 23 September) and €7 million from France (6 October). The paper asks where the money has gone.
