Saudi Arabia reports three dead at Riyadh airport as UN envoy says Yemen is back at full-scale war

Saudi Arabia said on Friday that three of its citizens, including a pilot, died in two Houthi attacks on Riyadh's King Khalid airport a day earlier. The UN envoy for Yemen told the Security Council the country has returned to full-scale war.

Saudi Arabia's civil aviation authority said the first attack on Thursday, 8 October, hit airport facilities and the second struck a Saudia aircraft, and that several people of different nationalities were wounded. Saudia said the damaged plane carried no passengers and identified one of the dead as pilot Hamoud al-Kalthami, according to the Financial Times. The Houthis claimed the strikes with cruise and ballistic missiles, and said they also targeted Najran airport and the Khamis Mushait air base, which Saudi authorities have not confirmed for Najran. Coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said three Houthi launch pads were destroyed and that attacks on civilians would meet a firm response. Houthi officials and affiliated media said Saudi airstrikes hit Sanaa overnight.

Airlines suspend flights, EU widens warning

Lufthansa, Air India and Singapore Airlines suspended flights to Riyadh, and foreign carriers including Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and Flydubai cancelled services, while Saudi carriers resumed on Friday. The EU aviation safety agency EASA advised airlines to avoid additional parts of Saudi airspace, saying the attacks showed the Houthis can and intend to strike deeper inside the kingdom. The US embassy in Jordan also issued a regional travel advisory.

UN envoy: war has spread across several fronts

Hans Grundberg told the Security Council on Friday that Yemen has fallen back into full-scale war, with hostilities spreading along multiple front lines and civilians bearing the heaviest burden. He condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi civilian and energy infrastructure, including the airports in Abha and Riyadh, and urged the parties to resume talks. Le Monde reports more than 400 deaths in Yemen since government forces launched an offensive on Monday, and more than 200,000 displaced, according to the International Organization for Migration.
