Symbolic imageEU trade chief talks in Beijing as Germany blocks Cosco takeover
EU trade commissioner Maroš Šefčovič is in Beijing to avert a trade war over Chinese exports. Berlin meanwhile vetoed a Cosco takeover in Hamburg.
Šefčovič arrived for talks lasting until Friday and wrote on X that he wants to start reducing the EU's "unsustainable trade deficit". He meets Chinese Trade Minister Wang Wentao and, according to Handelsblatt, wants a time-limited standstill deal. Diplomats say China has refused voluntary limits on hybrid car exports, so Brussels is weighing a temporary safeguard with quotas and high tariffs, which probably would have to cover partners such as Japan, South Korea and Britain too. Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said open cooperation and equal dialogue serve both sides. Germany and France are pressing for a new instrument to restrict market access quickly.
Yuan dispute
China's central bank said on Thursday it has never engaged in competitive depreciation, rejecting European calls for a stronger yuan. The EU imported about 360 billion euros more from China than it exported last year; Brussels blames state subsidies, Beijing warns against protectionism.
Berlin vetoes Cosco deal
After a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, 7 October, the German government blocked Cosco's plan to take 80% of Hamburg logistics firm Zippel, citing national security and the risk of deeper dependence on China. Cosco already holds 24.9% of the Tollerort container terminal, according to Le Monde.
