Symbolic imageUkrainian drones hit Yandex data centre and Omsk refinery
Ukrainian drones struck a Yandex data centre and the Omsk refinery, Russia's largest, on Thursday. Websites across Russia were disrupted.
The drone attack on Yandex's Sasovo hub in Ryazan region, overnight into Thursday, 8 October, started a fire and fully halted a site that hosts tens of thousands of servers; no one was hurt. Reuters calls it the first major attack on a Russian data hub since the war began. Yandex Cloud customers such as Cian, Russian Railways and T-Bank were disrupted, and RBC reported that sites including Kommersant and Vedomosti briefly stopped loading. Yandex says its core consumer services were unaffected but cannot yet say whether the equipment can be restored. It declined to say whether two of its three supercomputers, which train AI models and are housed there, were damaged. Its shares fell more than 3%.
Kyiv: a reply to data-centre strikes
Zelensky said "We hit back" at Russia's attacks on Ukrainian data centres, without giving details. Russia's Defence Ministry, which called its own strikes a "forced digital detox", has damaged or destroyed the data centres of at least eight companies since 23 September.
Omsk and Salavat refineries
Ukraine's General Staff confirmed a strike on the Omsk refinery, 2,500 kilometres from the border; the regional governor said one drone reached the northern industrial hub. Ukrainian monitoring channels reported a hit on Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat in Bashkortostan, while the local mayor reported a fire from falling debris. Russia's Defence Ministry says it downed 399 drones overnight.
Other opinions
Russian state outlet TASS, citing officials, attributes the Salavat fire to debris from a repelled attack, whereas Ukrainian monitoring channels report a direct strike on the refinery.
