US-Saudi strikes in Iraq
Symbolic imageWhere things stand
Wednesday's US-Saudi raids on Popular Mobilisation Forces bases killed at least 20 fighters by the PMF's count, and US Central Command followed with heavy strikes on IRGC targets inside Iran. Baghdad, citing its sovereignty, has postponed the prime minister's visit to Riyadh.
The dispute centres on drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities that Washington and Riyadh say were launched from Iraqi territory. In response, US and Saudi fighter aircraft bombed bases of Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces, a state-affiliated armed umbrella, in several provinces on Wednesday. The PMF reported at least 20 of its fighters killed, and the Iraqi groups deny any role in the attacks on Saudi Arabia.
The Iraqi government, which is allied with both Washington and the PMF, has treated the strikes as an attack on its sovereignty rather than a counter-strike carried out on its behalf. It cancelled a planned visit to Saudi Arabia and called its National Security Council into session. Whether Baghdad's response stays diplomatic, and whether the PMF retaliates, is so far unresolved.

US and Saudi aircraft bombed bases of Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces on Wednesday, killing at least 20 fighters by the PMF's own count and marking the first joint Saudi-American operation of the five-month war with Iran. Hours later US Central Command opened what it called a heavy wave of strikes on dozens of IRGC targets inside Iran, retaliating for Iranian missile fire on US bases in Jordan. Baghdad has since postponed a planned prime ministerial visit to Riyadh.

US and Saudi fighter aircraft struck bases of Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces across several provinces on Wednesday, killing at least 20 fighters according to the PMF. Washington and Riyadh said the strikes answered drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities launched from Iraqi territory; the Iraqi groups deny involvement.
