A local official says attackers killed 60 people in a cattle raid, an account reported Tuesday by The Hindu that remains independently unconfirmed, with the attackers not identified.

Cattle are the main store of wealth in much of rural South Sudan, and armed raids between herding communities regularly turn deadly, a pattern that outlasted the country's independence in 2011. Tolls are usually announced by local officials and are often hard to verify independently.
