Germany treats Leipzig drone bomb as professional hybrid threat

8 sources

German police found a drone with an explosive device beside a parked Ukrainian Antonov cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle, a NATO and DHL logistics hub, in the night to Wednesday. Germany's interior ministry calls it a professional hybrid threat scenario.

What happened

  • An airport employee spotted the drone in the secure cargo zone by the south runway; a federal police robot removed the detonator.
  • Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, 4 August, police reported an unidentified flying object; several cargo planes and a passenger jet were diverted.
  • A DHL cargo plane that aborted its landing hit an object about six kilometres out and landed in Hanover with minor nose damage.
  • Saxony's state criminal police and the extremism unit of the Dresden general prosecutor's office took over the case on Wednesday.

The view from outside

The Guardian, citing Leipziger Volkszeitung, reports up to 800 grams of explosive and a detonator that failed, and calls it the first explosives-carrying drone found in Europe far from Ukraine's border.

What could happen next

  • No suspect has been named: Moscow has not commented, and investigators have published no evidence of the drone's origin.
  • Accounts of the payload diverge, from PETN and semtex to the fertiliser and petrol mix reported by Bild.
  • Airport association ADV says Leipzig and other German airports still await the drone defence systems promised by the interior ministry.
How the camps see it
  • Germany: Speaks of a new level of danger and a professional hybrid threat scenario, but publicly names no perpetrator.

  • Ukraine: Its ambassador in Berlin blames Moscow: "Who else could it be but Russia?"

  • Russia: Has not commented on the incident.
