NATO pledges urgent air defences after Kyiv strike kills 17

8 sources

Russia's overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv and its region on Wednesday killed 17 people; Ukrainian defences intercepted none of the ballistic missiles. NATO's secretary general now says he is working urgently to secure interceptors for Ukraine.

What happened

  • Russia fired 24 Iskander-M ballistic and four Zircon/Onyx missiles plus 115 drones; defences downed 98 drones.
  • Mayor Klitschko reported one dead and 26 injured in Kyiv; others died in Brovary, Bucha and Fastiv districts.
  • Ukrzaliznytsia said some of those killed had stood on a railway platform beside the targeted logistics centres.
  • A strike in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district caused an ammonia leak; warehouse fires burned across the region.
  • Epicentr, Novus, Denka and Rozetka hubs were hit; TASS calculates roughly 300,000 square metres destroyed.

The view from outside

The Guardian links the interceptor shortage to the US-Israel war on Iran, citing an AP estimate that US Patriot stocks have fallen by at least 65 percent. Serbia's Politika reported a fresh Ukrainian air force warning of ballistic threats from the northeast overnight into Thursday.

What could happen next

  • No interceptor deliveries have been reported since NATO's July summit in Ankara, where members pledged purchases under PURL.
  • US licensing of Ukrainian Patriot production remains unresolved after Trump called the technology hard to give away.
  • Zelensky expects Moscow to raise ballistic missile output before winter and resume strikes on energy infrastructure.
  • Lockheed Martin delivered over 600 of its newest interceptors in 2025, targeting 2,000 a year by 2030.
How the camps see it
  • Russia: The Defence Ministry says the strike hit transport, logistics and distribution centres delivering military cargo and facilities producing drones.

  • Ukraine: Kyiv says the main targets were civilian, including a brewery, construction-material warehouses and a railway station, and blames delayed interceptor deliveries for the deaths.
