Rights group blames Sudan's army for drone strike on Darfur court

A drone strike on a traditional court in the North Darfur village of Garra al-Zawaya killed at least 35 people on Sunday. The rights group Emergency Lawyers blames Sudan's army.

What happened

Emergency Lawyers says the strike hit at about 1pm local time (11:00 GMT), during hearings on local cases and disputes.
A witness told AFP the session was being held under a tree with community leaders; the court building was damaged.
Among the dead were four tribal leaders and two RSF commanders, the same witness said.
The RSF-run administration put the toll at 37 killed and 50 wounded.
Garra al-Zawaya, under RSF control, lies near Kabkabiya, about 150 km west of el-Fasher.

The view from outside

Le Monde reports that the army had not responded to the accusation, and adds that RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, after losing a strategic highway linking Khartoum to el-Obeid last week, told his fighters in a video message they could consider themselves "freed from all constraint".

What could happen next

Responsibility is unclaimed and the tolls, ranging from 35 to 37 dead, are not independently verified.
The UN warns that RSF advances at el-Obeid and across Kordofan could bring large-scale atrocities; a ground offensive is feared.
UN investigators found the RSF capture of el-Fasher in October bore "the hallmarks of genocide"; both sides face war crimes accusations.
The UN counted more than 1,000 civilians killed in drone strikes in the first five months of this year.
