Symbolic imageSerbia's election commission confirms Student List majority
Serbia's electoral commission (RIK) allocated seats on Friday: the Student List won 140 of 250, Vučić's list 103. The result ends the hold of the bloc around Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party on parliament.
According to final RIK figures reported by Politika, the Student List took 53.01 per cent (2,354,417 votes) in the election of 25 October. That is 14 seats more than the 126 needed to elect a government without partners. The list "Aleksandar Vučić – United Serbia" received 38.98 per cent (1,731,323 votes). Seven seats went to minority lists, and voting had been repeated on Sunday, 1 November, at 53 polling stations. Parliament must convene within 30 days of the final results, and a government must then be formed within 90 days.
Socialists lose their seats
Ivica Dačić's list won 2.13 per cent (94,766 votes), below the threshold. The Socialist Party of Serbia, a long-time participant in government, therefore has no deputies in the new parliament.
Concession and doubts
Commentator Kapil Komireddi told Monocle Radio that Vučić conceded defeat as he had promised, which he called the first test of democracy passed. He doubts the ideologically mixed Student List can govern and expects Vučić to return quickly.
