Armed men blamed on the ADF killed at least 33 people in Cantine, North Kivu, and burned a health post. Ebola patients fled the attack.
The overnight raid on Cantine, about 50km west of Beni, was reported on Friday, 6 November. Beni territorial administrator Colonel Charles Omeonga told Reuters that Allied Democratic Forces fighters burned houses and killed civilians. Civil society leader Justin Paluku told AP his group had counted 33 bodies and more than 50 burned houses, and called the attack a major security failure given the forces deployed in the area. Fellow civil society leader Tchetche Aliamini said most victims were shot, while others were burned or hacked with machetes. The ADF, which pledged allegiance to ISIL in 2019, killed 66 people in eastern Congo in July 2025.
Ebola patients flee the health post
Christian Kakule, medical director of the Kelekele Hospital Centre, said 180 patients fled, among them suspected cases and one confirmed case, along with high-risk contacts under monitoring. He warned that probable cases in the open could trigger new transmission. North Kivu accounts for almost half of new infections in the Bundibugyo outbreak.
WHO backs two more vaccine candidates
In a statement on Wednesday, 4 November, the WHO recommended Oxford's ChAdOx1 and Moderna's mRNA-1469 for evaluation in Congo, pending national approvals. They would join the Tumaini ring-vaccination trial, where Ervebo is already being tested and four rings have been set up.
