Symbolic imageTrump promises 'big, beautiful' Ukraine deal as Europe fears being sidelined
Trump announced a sweeping agreement after meeting Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev, and Europeans fear exclusion. US-mediated Russia-Ukraine talks open in Abu Dhabi on 10 November.
After a private meeting with Dmitriev at the White House on Thursday, 5 November, Trump said he could not disclose what they discussed but predicted "a big, beautiful agreement" that "might involve all of Europe". He said he did not meet the Ukrainian delegation, which was in Washington for an event hosted by Melania Trump. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov tempered expectations: Moscow sees no European readiness to discuss a future security system, and the Europeans have not named a negotiator, though he said talks with them will be needed.
Kushner's security framework
Jared Kushner said US officials held "productive and substantive" talks in Brussels with Ukraine, NATO and European partners, exploring five goals including permanent security consultations and reciprocal measures to reduce escalation risks. He added that NATO stays central and no country gets a veto over another's choices. The Financial Times reports that European officials fear a US-Russia deal that undermines NATO, and Polish prime minister Donald Tusk said Russia's threat will grow, with the Baltic states and Poland as first targets.
Berlin demands a seat
After a night-time call between Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Trump, government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said the two sides agree the war must end first and a European security order be discussed afterwards, with NATO partners on board by consensus. He called talks without Europe not effective.
Abu Dhabi and the Oleshky track
The Abu Dhabi talks are the first between Russia and Ukraine since February, with Europeans absent. Melania Trump said about 800 people were evacuated from Oleshky during the six-day ceasefire, a figure neither side has confirmed; Russian ombudswoman Yana Lantratova said far fewer than 750 residents who were offered departure actually left. Melania Trump gave Dmitriev a letter for Putin, and he is expected in Moscow.
Other opinions
FAZ commentaries read the meeting as Trump taking Putin's bait at Ukraine's expense, while the Kremlin casts Europe as the side lacking a negotiator.
