Iran's Revolutionary Guards say three tankers hit sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday after taking an unauthorised route. Separately, India's foreign ministry says an Indian was killed in an attack on a ship near Oman.
The IRGC Navy said on Tuesday, 3 November, that three oil tankers exploded and caught fire in the early hours off the southern coast of the strait. It claims the ships had switched off their navigation and identification systems and struck mines on an unauthorised route. The Guards say their passage rules were repeatedly broadcast by radio and in notices. They warned that ships ignoring the rules and cooperating with the US military would face similar incidents. The cause of the explosions and any casualties have not been independently confirmed.
Indian killed near Oman
Reuters reports that India's foreign ministry said one Indian national died in an attack on a ship near Oman. The available text does not say whether this is linked to the three tankers.
Dispute with CENTCOM
The IRGC rejected the account of US Central Command and said the situation should be judged by developments on the ground. It called the footage circulated by the CENTCOM commander archival.
Mounting toll
The Guards say 11 vessels breaking their rules have burned since 25 October, some sinking. The IMO said on Monday that the true number of attacks is likely higher than the 125 it has recorded since February.
Other opinions
Tehran Times carries the IRGC account as stated, while Politika stresses that the Guards' claims about cause and casualties are unconfirmed.
