Symbolic imageAfrica CDC raises Ebola toll to 5,376 as Israel isolates two suspected cases
Africa CDC counts 5,376 deaths among 10,444 cases in the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, almost all in Congo. On Tuesday Israel put two travelers returning from Congo in isolation as suspected cases.
According to Africa CDC data shared on Monday, 2 November, 5,372 of the deaths occurred in Congo and two each in Kenya and Uganda. AFP reports a fatality rate above 50%. Congo declared its 17th Ebola outbreak in mid-May. No vaccine or treatment is approved for the Bundibugyo strain, though clinical trials of Ervebo, which proved effective against the more common Zaire strain, began in recent weeks.
Cases beyond Congo
Uganda recorded 20 cases, almost all among people who had traveled from Congo, before being declared Ebola-free in August. In October Kenya reported nine infections, its first, and Nigeria reported a case involving a 42-year-old Swiss woman who had traveled to Uganda.
Israel isolates two travelers
Israel's Health Ministry said on Tuesday, 3 November, that two people developed a fever after returning from Congo. They are being tested at Sheba and Ichilov medical centers. The ministry stresses there are no confirmed cases in Israel, says it is tracing contacts, and advises against travel to the affected Congolese provinces.
