Symbolic imageDemocrats secure Senate majority as Americans vote in midterms
Americans voted on Tuesday in midterms widely seen as a referendum on Trump's second term. Le Monde reports Democrats won a Senate majority that evening.
Le Monde reports that Josh Turek won Iowa on Tuesday, 3 November, beating Trump-backed Ashley Hinson and giving Democrats their 51st Senate seat. Earlier, James Talarico won in Texas and Adam Hamilton defeated incumbent Roger Marshall in Kansas. FAZ lists Republican Senate losses in Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, North Carolina and South Carolina. All 435 House seats were also on the ballot, where Democrats need 218.
Fuel prices at the polls
Gas averaged $4.13 a gallon on election morning, the highest ever recorded for 3 November, according to GasBuddy. Voters cited living costs and fuel prices that rose after the Iran war began, Bloomberg reports. Early votes exceeded 56 million (Guardian) or nearly 58 million (Le Monde).
Trump threatens vetoes
Trump told the New York Post he would veto bills from a Democratic Congress "all the time", and on Tuesday he posted a "VETO" cap image on Truth Social, according to Le Monde. FAZ reports he rejected blame for the losses.
Federal monitors deployed
The Trump administration sent election monitors to all 50 states, including Los Angeles, which the Guardian says is widely seen as intimidation. A judge earlier rejected a Justice Department lawsuit over certification of Alaska's Senate race.
