India is moving tens of thousands of people to shelters as Cyclone Arnab approaches its eastern coast.

The India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday that Arnab, a "very severe" cyclonic storm, was centred 260km southeast of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. It expects the storm to cross the coast by 11:30am local time on Wednesday, 28 October, with sustained winds of 115-125km/h and gusts up to 140km/h. Andhra Pradesh's disaster management authority says more than 12 million people live along the projected path. Its managing director, Prakhar Jain, told Reuters that nearly 50,000 people had reached shelters by Monday night, out of an estimated 400,000 needing evacuation. Al Jazeera's video report says heavy rain and coastal flooding hit the coast on Tuesday.

Trains cancelled, Odisha evacuates

Railway authorities said on social media that at least 12 trains were cancelled in eastern India and services on 53 southern coastal routes were suspended for Tuesday and Wednesday. In Odisha, authorities plan to evacuate 48,000 people, according to The Hindu.

Nepal warns of Himalayan risk

Nepal's authorities advised tourists to avoid high-altitude areas, fearing heavy rain, snowstorms and avalanches from Thursday night to Saturday. A Himalayan flash flood in August killed about 1,500 people in the country.
