Symbolic imageChurch reports 60 Orthodox Christians killed in two Oromia attacks
Ethiopia's Orthodox Church says armed attackers killed at least 60 Christians in two attacks in Oromia's Arsi Zone. No group has claimed responsibility.
The church's Holy Synod said on Monday, 26 October, that 14 people were killed on 20 October in Merti district and 46 on 24 October in Shirka district. More than 20 people were seriously injured and about 20 homes were burned, it added. The local outlet Abay Times reported at least 48 dead in the villages of Chole and Birbo, citing witnesses who described automatic weapons. Oromia's authorities and the armed opposition blame each other, and Al Jazeera reports that a local official accused a new rebel alliance including the Oromo Liberation Army, which has previously denied attacking civilians. The synod demanded public condemnation, better civilian protection and prosecutions, while the regional government pledged to pursue those responsible and the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission said it is investigating.
36,000 flee into Kenya
The UN refugee agency UNHCR said on Tuesday, 27 October, that about 36,000 people have crossed into Kenya, fleeing violence in Moyale. Fighting between forces from the Somali and Oromia regions began after a Somali regional flag was raised in the town, and crossings rose sharply from 22 October. UNHCR names food aid as the priority, along with drinking water, shelter and health care.
