Symbolic imageDrone strikes kill 21 in Nyala and cut power across Sudan as states warn of famine
A drone strike on a market in Nyala killed at least 21 people on Monday, while RSF drones hit power stations. The US, EU and 30 countries warned of famine.
A drone struck a market in the north of Nyala, the de facto capital of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur, at about 8 pm on Monday, 26 October. A medic at Nyala Hospital told AFP that 21 people died and more than 40 were wounded, but could not say how many were RSF fighters. A resident said the market was frequented by RSF fighters. The sources do not name who launched the drone, but the army regularly strikes Nyala. According to a UN tally, drone strikes killed over 300 people in the first three weeks of October.
RSF drones hit power stations
RSF drones attacked six power stations on Monday, leaving millions without electricity in Gezira, White Nile, Sennar and Gedaref states. On Tuesday, a source at the national electricity company said RSF drones hit the al-Markhiyat transformer station, disrupting supply across large parts of Khartoum and Gezira.
Famine warning
In a statement released by the US State Department on Monday, the US, the EU and 30 countries cited the IPC's warning of famine in the coming months. They urged the warring parties to lift impediments to aid, including air access to Darfur, and said the number of children with severe acute malnutrition could exceed the projected 825,000.
