Symbolic imageTech rout over AI financing fears drives investors into bonds
A tech sell-off on Thursday sent investors into government bonds and pushed gold below $4,000 an ounce.
The Nasdaq fell 2.6% and the SOX semiconductor index dropped almost 7%, testing its 200-day line for the first time in 16 months, according to Handelsblatt. Asian stocks followed Wall Street lower, while Japanese bonds and the yen rallied, the Financial Times reports. The yield on 10-year US Treasuries fell to around 5%, and Bloomberg reports hedge funds logged their widest daily drawdown since Covid.
Financing in focus
Meta's credit risk gauge hit a record after its results, per Reuters, and Handelsblatt notes speculation about a Meta capital raise. OpenAI is seeking up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, down from the $1.4 trillion discussed earlier, Bloomberg reports. SpaceX is preparing a $40 billion bond at higher funding costs.
Gold slides
Gold fell below $4,000 an ounce. Reuters ties a steep weekly loss to oil prices fuelling Fed rate concerns, while Bloomberg says gold holds near a three-month low.
Demand still strong
Western Digital beat profit and revenue expectations, and Bloom Energy raised its annual forecast. JPMorgan stays tactically bullish but warns the rotation out of tech may not be over.
