Symbolic imageEU and US condemn settler attacks on diplomats and photographer in West Bank
Masked Israeli settlers attacked Belgian, French and Polish diplomats and a French mayor near Taybeh on Saturday, a day after a Washington Post photographer was beaten. The EU and US demanded accountability.
The delegation was visiting olive groves on Saturday, 17 October, when the attack happened; a Belgian consular vehicle was damaged, and mayor Bernard Baudoux says masked men beat and kicked him with metal bars. On Friday, photographer Heidi Levine was beaten near Abu Falah and needed hand surgery. An EU spokesperson said on Sunday the bloc expects full accountability. Belgium's foreign minister Maxime Prévot called for EU sanctions on those responsible and their supporters, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington was deeply disturbed by the images. By Sunday, Israeli authorities had announced no arrests, though police opened investigations.
Netanyahu questions the accounts
Netanyahu's office said serious accusations require serious evidence, noted that the diplomats entered a sensitive area without IDF coordination and spoke of a coordinated smear campaign. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and the IDF blamed "Israeli rioters", and President Isaac Herzog apologised to Levine.
Army points to Area B and the courts
A senior security official said all incidents occurred in Area B, where harvesting needs no IDF coordination, and criticised courts for lenient restrictions on arrested outpost activists.
