Symbolic imageEbola reaches eighth Congo province as Kenya's case count rises to eight
Congo said on Sunday that Ebola has spread to North Ubangi, its eighth province. Kenya confirmed an eighth case the same day.
Kenya's Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth said on Sunday, 18 October, that one of 38 people tested that day was positive. The man is 49, not a health worker, and cleaned utensils and linens as a patient attendant. He was probably exposed to Kenya's first case, who travelled from Congo and died in Nairobi on 5 October. A day earlier the ministry had reported four cases, three of them health workers who treated that first patient, bringing the total to seven.
North Ubangi added
Congo's Health Ministry recorded two cases, one fatal, in North Ubangi, both men in their 20s from the Wapinda health zone bordering Bas-Uele province. Authorities count at least 9,400 cases and more than 4,500 deaths since mid-May, the deadliest outbreak in the country's history.
North Kivu restricts entry
State agency ACP reports that North Kivu will ban entry from Ituri for one week from Monday. It will also limit passengers in cars and on motorbikes and suspend large gatherings. Ituri remains the epicentre, with almost three quarters of confirmed cases.
Kenya's contact tracing
On Saturday the ministry said it had traced and quarantined 128 of 130 listed contacts. It added that all four new patients developed symptoms while already in quarantine.
