Symbolic imageUkraine fires over 1,000 drones at Russia, setting St Petersburg oil terminal ablaze
Ukraine hit St Petersburg's oil terminal and data centres on Sunday in one of its largest drone attacks, killing one person. Russia kept striking Ukraine's energy grid.
Russia's Defence Ministry said it destroyed 1,015 Ukrainian drones over 15 regions, Crimea and the Black Sea on Sunday, 18 October. Governor Alexander Beglov reported one dead and five injured in St Petersburg, with fires at the oil terminal, the Ruchi depot and warehouses in the Kolpinsky district. Ozon said its logistics hub burned, and VK said its data centre in the Leningrad region was attacked but services ran normally. About 20,000 people lost power in that region, its governor said.
Russian strikes on the grid
Zelenskyy said Russia hit Ukraine's energy sector 76 times in the week since Trump's 11 October energy-ceasefire announcement, leaving tens of thousands of families without power overnight. Ukraine also reported a Kyiv subway station damaged.
Friction with Washington
Trump said Zelenskyy "doesn't want to end this war" and has put new Russia sanctions on hold. Zelenskyy said US intelligence sharing had resumed after a block, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called his Starlink accusation "reckless". Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told TASS that Kyiv cannot change the course of events.
Other opinions
Beglov, quoted by Politika, called the attackers "Ukrainian Nazis"; TASS stressed that the raid was among the largest on the Leningrad region in four years.
