Symbolic imageHouthi attacks on Saudi Arabia intensify as Egypt prepares to back Riyadh
Houthi missiles and drones keep hitting Saudi Arabia, and Egypt says it is ready to support the kingdom's defence. Riyadh has reported its first military deaths.
Saudi Arabia said it intercepted multiple missiles and drones aimed at Riyadh on Sunday, 18 October, and six people were injured in a Houthi strike on Najran. A Houthi spokesman said Saudi warplanes made ten airstrikes in Yemen since Saturday, killing or wounding over 30 people. The Financial Times and Reuters report that a helicopter crash in Najran killed two crew, according to the Saudi-led coalition. The Houthis also hit Riyadh's airport and Saudi Aramco in recent days, the Jerusalem Post reports.
Egypt readies backing
After a National Defense Council meeting, Egypt's presidency said it would give Riyadh all necessary support. President Sisi asked parliament to authorize the military if the kingdom requests help; the New York Times says he called any aid defensive. Lawmakers' debate continues on Monday, and Egypt's foreign minister urged de-escalation in a call with his Saudi counterpart.
Riyadh's limited options
A FAZ commentary sees no good exit for Riyadh: a deal would reward blackmail, escalation is risky, and Trump hesitates while Turkey and Pakistan engage cautiously.
