Symbolic imageIran says Hormuz offer stands as another tanker burns
Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi says Iran's offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days remains on the table. The Revolutionary Guards report another tanker hit a mine.
Speaking in Baghdad on Sunday, 18 October, Araghchi said that if the US meets Iran's conditions, the strait would open on day six and talks would begin on day seven. Iran tabled the proposal in mid-September after a temporary ceasefire collapsed. Its conditions include lifting the US blockade of Iranian ports and sanctions on oil exports, and ending hostilities on all regional fronts. Washington insists the nuclear issue be addressed from the start.
Tanker burns after mine hit
According to FAZ, the Revolutionary Guards say an oil tanker hit a sea mine in the strait and caught fire. On Saturday, 17 October, they had said two loaded supertankers were disabled by mines and declared the strait closed.
New defence minister warns Washington
Parliament confirmed Mehrdad Akhlaghi Ketabchi on Sunday by 237 votes to 15, replacing an interim minister after US-Israeli strikes killed Aziz Nasirzadeh in February. He warned that another US "miscalculation" would bring a "surprising and extensive" response. CNN had reported US strike plans that could include the GBU-43/B bomb.
