Symbolic imageRussian barrage kills at least 24 across Ukraine on Putin's birthday
Russian missiles and drones struck Ukraine overnight into Wednesday, killing at least 24 people. Kyiv says the destruction of an apartment block in Pryluky was a 'birthday gift' to Vladimir Putin.
The attack came hours after Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Tuesday of an imminent large-scale strike, and hit on Wednesday, 7 October, when Putin turned 74. By evening Zelensky spoke of 25 dead and more than 100 injured. In Pryluky, in the Chernihiv region, a missile destroyed a five-storey apartment block, killing 18 to 19 people according to Zelensky and regional authorities, among them four to five children, and rescuers were still searching the rubble. Two people died in Kyiv and two in Kremenchuk.
Energy grid in the sights
Zelensky said energy infrastructure was a key target, and Ukraine's energy ministry reported emergency power cuts in several Kyiv districts. The air force counted 70 missiles and 130 drones; Zelensky said ballistic missiles remain hardest to intercept and asked allies for Patriot interceptors. Foreign minister Andriy Sybiha called the strikes war crimes and urged tighter sanctions.
Moscow's account
Russia's defence ministry said it hit plants producing and storing Flamingo missiles and drones, and named an industrial facility as the target in Pryluky. According to Meduza, it did not report any strikes on energy infrastructure.
Ukraine strikes back
Zelensky cited Ukrainian attacks on oil facilities and other targets in Perm, Samara and Astrakhan. He also posted video of an oil tanker set on fire off Sochi a day earlier.
