Symbolic imageFrench foreign minister visits Ituri as Congo's Ebola outbreak is called its deadliest
France's foreign minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Bunia in Ituri on Saturday to pledge support against Ebola. Congolese authorities describe the outbreak as the deadliest in the country's history.
Barrot travelled to Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, on Saturday, 3 October, and called French help in the fight against Ebola "indispensable", according to Le Monde. The paper cites Congolese government authorities as putting the death toll at more than 4,000, well above the 2,000 to 2,100 reported in other tallies of the outbreak. A day earlier, Congo's health minister had said that the number of affected health zones had fallen and that the epidemic was under control. Le Monde frames the visit as a show of Paris's support for Kinshasa.
