Pentagon counts 153 civilian deaths in Yemen strikes as Houthis hit Red Sea shipping

A Pentagon review disclosed on Tuesday found that US strikes on Yemen's Houthis killed 153 civilians in 2025. It surfaced as the rebels escalated their attacks on shipping.

The unclassified assessment, part of the Pentagon's annual civilian casualty report to Congress and obtained by the Associated Press, counted 243 wounded and traced every case to three strikes in April 2025 around Sanaa and the Ras Isa fuel port. Ras Isa alone killed 80 people and injured 171; CENTCOM said at the time it was cutting off Houthi fuel and revenue. The review found condolence payments not appropriate, without explaining why.

Missiles hit a freighter, then its rescuers

The Houthis said they hit the Egyptian-owned freighter Tihamah with three ballistic missiles in the Bab al-Mandeb early on Tuesday, 11 August, then fired another at the coastguard team evacuating the crew. Three Pakistani and one Indonesian crew member and two Yemeni rescuers died, Yemen's government said; the rebels called the ship a Saudi arms carrier.

Rebel losses mount on the ground

Yemeni government forces shelled Houthi positions in northern Dhale on Tuesday evening, TASS reported, citing local outlets. Al Arabiya, citing unnamed sources, put rebel losses at 84 fighters, 28 of them commanders, over six days.

Other opinions

Breitbart, which calls the rebels "Iran-backed Houthi terrorists", reported only their attacks; TASS covered the fighting and the ship strike without the Pentagon figures.
