Moscow has warned that armed provocations in Transnistria would count as an attack on Russia, and drone incidents are spreading westward: Romania destroyed two suspected Russian drones at sea, while an unidentified drone shut Hanover airport's runways overnight into Tuesday.

Transnistria is a Russian-backed breakaway region on Moldova's eastern edge, outside the control of the government in Chisinau since the war of 1992. Moscow supports the territory and its residents, many of whom hold or seek Russian passports, which keeps Chisinau and Moscow at odds over its status.

Moldova recalls ambassador from Moscow after drone crash

Moldova's foreign ministry recalled its ambassador from Moscow for consultations after a drone crashed in the village of Crocmaz near the Ukrainian border, Meduza reported on Monday. According to TASS, Russian deputy foreign minister Mikhail Galuzin said armed provocations in Transnistria would be regarded as an attack on Russia, while Meduza reported that more than 60,000 residents of the breakaway region have applied for Russian citizenship under a simplified procedure.
