Death toll rises to 11 after Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian Black Sea coast and Crimea

5 sources

A Ukrainian drone came down on a crowded beach at Arkhipo-Osipovka near Gelendzhik on Monday, killing seven people, among them three children. Russian officials put the combined toll from the coastal and Crimean strikes at 11.

What happened

  • Krasnodar governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported about 40, later around 47, injured; an aide to the health minister said 21 were hospitalized.
  • Videos verified by Reuters and the BBC show the drone striking the shore while tourists swam and sunbathed.
  • Gelendzhik head Alexey Bogodistov announced a drone alert at 8:34 a.m. and cancelled it 10 minutes later, Ostorozhno Novosti reported.
  • Residents and tourists told Russian media that sirens never sounded, though the village has a warning system.
  • Russia's Defence Ministry said air defences downed 131 drones overnight over Russian regions, Crimea and the Black Sea.

The view from outside

The Guardian sets the strikes beside a bombing at a Moscow restaurant on Saturday evening that killed five and injured 19, which Russia's foreign ministry blames on Kyiv. The New York Times writes that it remains unclear what the drone was targeting.

What could happen next

  • Casualty counts shifted through Monday: Russian officials first said six dead in Arkhipo-Osipovka and three in Crimea, later seven and four.
  • Kyiv had not commented on the strike as of Tuesday, the Guardian reports.
  • Ukrainian Telegram channels say electronic warfare brought the drone down over the beach; this is unconfirmed.
  • No explanation has been reported for why the local sirens stayed silent.
How the camps see it
  • Russia: Officials call the strike an attack aimed at civilian infrastructure and, in Kondratyev's words, a cynical and inhumane terrorist attack.

  • Ukraine: Kyiv has not commented or claimed the strike; both sides say they do not target civilians.
