Lithuania summons Russian envoy after Kyiv barrage damages embassy

11 sources

Russian missiles killed at least nine people in Kyiv overnight into Saturday and damaged Lithuania's embassy. Vilnius has since summoned Russia's representative there.

What happened

  • Russia fired 35 missiles, 27 of them ballistic, plus 185 drones at Kyiv and its region overnight into Saturday, 1 August.
  • Ukrainian air defences downed one ballistic missile, one cruise missile and 154 drones, according to Folha's tally.
  • Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko reported nine dead and 28 wounded; Le Monde puts the wounded at 33.
  • Zelensky said the strikes damaged 18 residential buildings, a school and critical infrastructure across several Kyiv districts.
  • Lithuania's foreign minister Kestutis Budrys said missiles fell metres from the embassy and no staff were injured.

The view from outside

Brazil's Folha sets the night against a July total of 376 missiles fired at Ukraine, 126 of them ballistic, and reports that two Ukrainian sea drones sank a container ship owned by a Rosatom subsidiary the same day. Le Monde adds that an improvised device killed three people in a Moscow café on Saturday, according to Russia's anti-terrorism committee.

What could happen next

  • Tolls diverge: most outlets report nine killed in Kyiv, while Folha's later dispatch says at least ten.
  • Whether Ukraine or a European ally may build Patriot interceptors under licence remains undecided in Washington.
  • Lithuania's summons of Russia's representative in Vilnius has yet to take place.
  • Ukraine plans an ambassadors' meeting on weapons deliveries and sanctions enforcement, citing gaps in G7 jurisdictions.
How the camps see it
  • Russia: The defence ministry calls the strikes high-precision hits on military-industrial firms and logistics centres, and Moscow denies deliberately targeting civilians.

  • Ukraine: Zelensky says the lack of Patriot interceptors encourages such attacks and demands deliveries now plus sanctions on suppliers to Russia's missile industry.
