Egypt investigates Damietta port drone strike as Iran war draws in more states

4 sources

A drone strike set two vessels alight at Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta on Wednesday, the first such attack on Egyptian soil since the US-Iran war began in February. Cairo said an initial investigation pointed to an unidentified drone and that no group had claimed responsibility. The port sits near the Suez Canal, and the strike has focused attention on how exposed the waterway's shipping is as the war pulls in Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

What happened

On Wednesday, 29 July, a fire broke out on two vessels at Damietta port on Egypt's Mediterranean coast, close to the northern entrance of the Suez Canal. The Egyptian cabinet said a day later that an initial investigation showed an unidentified drone had caused the fire, and that no group had claimed responsibility. Trading sources cited by Reuters said the drone hit the US-owned floating storage and regasification unit Energos Winter, owned by Energos Infrastructure and managed by Wilhelmsen Ship Management, and that the fire spread to a second vessel. Egyptian security sources told The National that examination of the wreckage indicated at least two drones, and that military experts had opened a high-level investigation into how they penetrated several layers of air defence around what is a heavily guarded energy hub. Cairo's first statement on Wednesday mentioned only a fire and no drone; the attack was first reported by the British maritime security firm Ambrey. US President Donald Trump said he had been briefed on the incident.

The view from outside

Gulf and Turkish outlets place the strike inside a war that has spread well past its two main adversaries. The National reports Egyptian sources saying Cairo has contacted Iranian officials to establish responsibility and would keep any response restrained even once the perpetrator is known, because escalation "will not help anyone". Daily Sabah lists the same day's spillover: an Iranian strike on a Chinese company's building in northern Kuwait that killed a worker, five Iranian missiles intercepted by Jordan, and Saudi Arabia openly joining US strikes on Iran-aligned groups in eastern Iraq.

What could happen next

Egypt is one of four mediators, with Pakistan, Qatar and Turkey, trying to revive the June ceasefire that collapsed this month, and its sources say it will pursue diplomatic steps rather than retaliation. The New York Times reported on Friday that the list of countries touched by the war keeps growing, with some now taking part directly; Saudi Arabia's defence minister used a Washington meeting with Vice President JD Vance on Wednesday to urge the administration against further escalation. With Houthi forces declaring a naval blockade on Saudi shipping and a drone now reaching a guarded Egyptian energy terminal, insurers and operators face a second pressure point on the Suez route alongside Hormuz. Egypt's air-defence review and its contacts with Tehran are the near-term steps to watch.

How the camps see it
  • Egypt: Calls the strike an attack by an unidentified drone, says it will protect its national security but signals it will not retaliate militarily while it keeps mediating.

  • United States: Says it struck IRGC command centres and drone facilities in response to Iranian fire on its forces, and has been briefed on the hit to the US-owned tanker at Damietta.

  • Iran: Has not claimed the Damietta strike; reports civilian and Guards deaths from US attacks and says it struck the US-run Azraq base in Jordan in retaliation.
