A cruise missile came down in a field in south-eastern Poland early on Thursday, tearing a crater about ten metres wide near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia and injuring no one. Poland's prime minister said the recovered fragments point to a Russian Kh-101 and that Poland had not been the target, while Poland and NATO switched on ground-based and airborne air defences. Russia has not commented on the incident, and investigators have yet to identify the debris definitively.
What happened
The Polish army detected an unidentified object over the south-east of the country at 3:40 a.m. local time on Thursday, 30 July, according to figures cited by both Warsaw and the Russian agency TASS. Investigators later found a crater in a field near Tarnawa-Kolonia in Lublin Voivodeship, ten metres wide and, FAZ reports, five metres deep, with fragments scattered over almost 200 metres; residents told police they heard an explosion around 4 a.m. that shook their windows. Prime Minister Donald Tusk travelled to the site and said military experts read most of the recovered fragments as belonging to a Russian Kh-101 cruise missile, that nothing indicated Poland was the target, and that the military had been ready to shoot the missile down had it flown on towards a built-up area. Poland scrambled fighter jets, and a SHAPE spokesman confirmed that Poland and NATO activated ground-based and air-based air defence assets. Poland's defence minister said around 20 objects had been observed near Polish airspace overnight. The projectile came down during a large Russian strike on Kyiv, Lviv and the Kryvyi Rih area, in which at least eight people were killed, according to Koha, and 13 according to the Guardian, among them six members of one family.
The view from outside
The Kosovar paper Koha, reporting from outside the parties, places the strike in a series: Russian drones and one Russian missile have come down in Poland since February 2022, and in November 2022 two Polish farmers were killed by a missile just across the Ukrainian border that is believed to have been a Ukrainian air-defence round fired in response to a Russian attack.
What could happen next
According to FAZ, this is the first time a Russian missile carrying a warhead has come down on NATO territory, which the paper calls a new quality even though the incident ended without casualties. Germany's chancellor spoke of Russia's irresponsibility and will to escalate, EU Commission president von der Leyen called it another unacceptable violation of EU airspace, and European Council president Costa tied it to the wider strike on Ukraine. The technical examination of the debris is continuing, and Tusk said the United States was interested in investigating the circumstances; TASS stresses that he named the missile type before any official findings. Moscow's embassy in Warsaw did not respond to a request for comment.
