US regulators cleared Amazon's Zoox on Thursday to charge passengers in its steering-wheel-free robotaxi and to deploy up to 5,000 vehicles, with the commercial service set to start in Las Vegas.

Zoox is Amazon's robotaxi unit. Unlike converted cars, its vehicle is built without a steering wheel, which means it needs its own federal clearance before it can carry paying passengers on US roads. That clearance has now been granted, together with permission to charge fares and to put up to 5,000 vehicles on the road, according to reporting by the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg on Thursday, 30 July. Al Jazeera reported that Zoox will open its commercial service in Las Vegas. How quickly the fleet grows towards the permitted ceiling is not yet clear from the reporting.
