Chad has formally notified the United Nations secretary-general that it is leaving the International Criminal Court, a step that under the Rome Statute's one-year notice period takes effect in July 2027, according to Le Monde and TASS. Investigations already under way are not affected by the withdrawal. N'Djamena says it acted at the request of the United States, according to Le Monde, which does not indicate that Washington has confirmed that account. The move comes as Chad's role in the war in Sudan is under scrutiny by the court's prosecutors, per Le Monde, giving the timing an obvious relevance that the government has not itself addressed publicly in these reports. For now the withdrawal is a declaration of intent with a delayed legal effect: Chad remains a party to the Rome Statute until 2027, and the open cases touching it continue. What is not yet clear is how the prosecutors' work on Sudan will develop in the interval, or whether other states will follow.

The International Criminal Court, established by the Rome Statute, prosecutes individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes when national courts do not act. States that join can leave, but a withdrawal only takes legal effect one year after formal notice is deposited with the UN secretary-general, and it does not halt proceedings already opened. Chad, in central Africa, borders Sudan, where a war has been under way and where the court has a long-standing mandate. According to Le Monde, ICC prosecutors are examining Chad's role in that conflict. Chad's notification, filed with the UN, sets its exit for July 2027.
