Ukrainian drones killed at least 13 people in the Russian refinery city of Nizhnekamsk on Monday. Russian strikes then hit Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv.

Kyiv's general staff confirmed its drones struck the Taneco oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, some 1,200 kilometres from the border, on Monday, 10 August. Tatarstan's government said 78 people needed medical treatment; the republic's head, Rustam Minnikhanov, said a drone hit a workers' hostel where nine died, and declared mourning. Seven of the dead were Uzbek citizens, the Uzbek consulate in Kazan said. The Guardian ranks the raid among the deadliest Ukrainian attacks on Russian soil since 2022.

Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv under fire

Guided bombs injured 24 people in Zaporizhzhia on Monday, governor Ivan Fedorov said; overnight into Tuesday he reported five killed and 20 wounded. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said ballistic missiles struck central Kyiv.

Siberia within range

Tyumen governor Alexander Moor said drones hit an industrial site; Kyiv confirmed striking a petrochemical plant in Tobolsk, over 2,200 kilometres from the border. Russia's defence ministry said it downed 456 drones.

Moscow calls it terror

Russian prosecutors opened a criminal case into what they call a terrorist attack; Zelensky called the strikes ‘entirely justified’.
