Houthis strike Aramco refinery and hit al-Makha port twice

Houthi missiles and drones struck Yemen's government-held port of al-Makha in two waves on Sunday. The same morning the rebels claimed a drone attack on Aramco's Jazan refinery.

Yemen's armed forces said on Monday that a second barrage on the evening of Sunday, 9 August, killed four soldiers and three civilians and wounded 30; air defences shot down 11 drones. An earlier wave the same day killed at least 11 people and wounded 32, according to AFP, and the Associated Press reported damage to port infrastructure and food supplies. Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said the operation hit Saudi troop concentrations and weapons depots in response to a Saudi buildup on Yemen's western coast and in Taiz; the National Resistance Forces called the shelling indiscriminate.

Fire at the Jazan refinery

Saudi Arabia's energy ministry said a fire broke out at dawn at the Aramco refinery, which processes 400,000 barrels a day, and was put out without injuries; it gave no cause. Saree said a drone scored a direct hit, answering Saudi drone incursions over Saada and Hajjah.

Two days after the defence pact

Riyadh signed a mutual defence pact with Turkey and Pakistan on Friday, under which an attack on one is an attack on all; the South China Morning Post writes it is unclear whether either would join a Saudi response.
