Drone strikes kill nine in Russia as Ukraine says it hit Saratov refinery

11 sources

Ukrainian drone attacks on more than a dozen Russian regions killed at least nine people on Sunday, among them a 13-year-old girl in Belgorod region. Russian strikes on Ukraine killed at least five the same day.

What happened

  • Kyiv's military said it hit the Saratov refinery (Bloomberg: Rosneft's), the Engels air base and a Kaluga oil depot.
  • Drones also struck a Wildberries warehouse in Samara region, about 800 km from the front, without casualties.
  • Governors reported three dead in Udmurtia, three in Belgorod and two in a residential building in Engels.
  • Moscow's defence ministry said it downed 635 drones overnight and 245 more across several regions on Sunday.
  • The ministry said its forces hit two vessels with military cargo in Mykolaiv port and Ukrainian logistics sites.

The view from outside

FAZ's liveblog reports that a man opened fire at a recruitment centre in Odesa, with motive and sequence unclear. Folha de S.Paulo adds that Ukraine has struck around a dozen Wildberries sites since 18 July.

What could happen next

  • Figures diverge: Reuters reports eight dead in Russia, Folha and SCMP nine; The Hindu counts 14 across both countries.
  • Damage at the Saratov refinery and Engels air base is unclear; officials reported only fires.
  • Kyiv is pressing for sanctions on suppliers of Russian drone, missile and guided-bomb components.
  • US-mediated talks remain frozen while both sides expand long-range strikes.
How the camps see it
  • Russia: Moscow calls the strike near a playground in Printsevka a terror attack and says Ukrainian attacks have killed over 35 minors this year.

  • Ukraine: Kyiv denies targeting civilians and calls its strikes fair retaliation meant to press Moscow into negotiations.
