Extreme heat has pushed Europe's harvests weeks early and cut yields. Low rivers are throttling freight and reactor cooling; Britain gave farmers £65m on Friday.

France's grape harvest began in mid-July in parts of Occitanie, unprecedented according to Le Monde, and one Champagne grower starts on Saturday, 15 August, at least a week ahead of 2025. Britain faces its worst cereal harvest in four decades, the Guardian reports from AHDB estimates, with cereals and oilseed forecast at 18.5m tonnes. Parched soils now threaten next year's crops, Bloomberg reports.

Rhine barges lighter, reactors offline

The Rhine gauge at Kaub stood at 15 centimetres on Monday, with FAZ reporting barges running half-loaded. Romania's Nuclearelectrica shut its last working reactor on Thursday; Hungary now runs Paks at 25%.

Aid in Britain, desalination too late

Most of the £65m goes to the sustainable farming incentive, taking it to £290m, with £15m for on-farm reservoirs that campaigners call a fraction of the need. Thames Water's Beckton plant may restart only by year's end.

France's emergency farm law upheld

The Conseil constitutionnel upheld almost all of France's agricultural emergency law on Friday, 14 August, including derogations for two banned pesticides and a doubling of farm water storage.
