Jared Kushner is due in Israel next week to save the US-backed Gaza plan. Netanyahu rejected its Hamas disarmament terms on Sunday.

Kushner is due next week in Israel and Egypt with Board of Peace representative Nickolay Mladenov and former British prime minister Tony Blair, an official source told The National on Friday, 14 August. A Board of Peace official said Washington and Israel “agree on the end state, which is a demilitarised Hamas”, and that the delegation would hear Israeli concerns. Netanyahu says Israel will not withdraw from its current positions until Hamas is disarmed, and its forces still hold most of the enclave despite the ceasefire of last October.

What the roadmap requires

The Board of Peace roadmap of 31 July pairs disarmament with a phased Israeli withdrawal, hands Gaza's administration to a Palestinian technocratic committee and adds an international stabilisation force. Hamas official Ghazi Hamad told Anadolu heavy weapons would be stored under the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza.

Washington's calculus

A US official told Axios the two sides “see eye-to-eye on the strategic goal” but that Israel has doubts, and the White House does not want Israeli elections to delay the next phase.
