UN says Yemen closest to full-scale war since 2022 as strikes widen

The UN envoy warned on Thursday that Yemen is closer to all-out war than at any time since the 2022 truce. Houthi forces hit a military airfield near Bab al-Mandeb and claimed a drone strike on a Saudi refinery.

The UN special envoy, Hans Grundberg, said military activity had intensified across Yemen's frozen front lines, with Houthi and government forces clashing in Marib, Hadramout and al-Makha. The internationally recognised government said it repelled an attack on Taiz and used artillery and drones against Houthi positions on Wednesday, 12 August. Grundberg warned that renewed Red Sea attacks could pull Yemen into the US-Iran confrontation and urged both sides towards a ceasefire.

Missiles on Taiz, drones on Jazan

Houthi forces fired two missiles at a military airfield in Taiz governorate near the strait, TASS reported, with no immediate word on casualties. On Thursday the group claimed a drone attack on an oil refinery in Saudi Arabia's Jazan province, saying it answered Saudi violations; Bloomberg reports Aramco's plant there was targeted again.

Thirteen states launch Red Sea force

Saudi Arabia's Defence Ministry said after a Jeddah meeting that 13 of the 15 signatories to its Multinational Maritime Defense Coalition have completed accession, launching operations under a Saudi commander with a Pakistani deputy.

Russia told the session the escalation began with an "excessive" reaction to an Iranian flight's attempted landing in Sanaa; Britain and the US faulted "reckless Houthi actions".
