Protests in India

Symbolic image

The Cockroach Janta Party, known as the Cockroach movement, emerged in 2026 out of outrage over India's education and justice systems, after the chief justice compared unemployed young adults to cockroaches. Its predominantly young supporters demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a reform of the examination system following repeated leaks of questions, and compensation for the families of students who took their own lives after the scandals. On July 20, 2026, more than 10,000 people marched on parliament in Delhi; police used tear gas and batons, shut down mobile internet and closed metro stations. These are the largest mass protests in years against the twelve-year rule of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu-nationalist BJP.
