Gaza hunger eases but aid cuts threaten a new famine surge
Gaza's hunger emergency has entered a phase of fragile improvement. A new assessment by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, published this week, is the first since famine was declared in parts of the territory in August of last year to document measurable gains rather than further decline: acute malnutrition has fallen, and among children it has returned to levels international standards consider acceptable. The IPC attributes the turn to larger aid deliveries and to reduced fighting following the cease-fire of October 2025. The scale of need nonetheless remains vast, with about 1.2 million people, or 59 percent of the population, classified as acutely food insecure between April and June.
The report's forward-looking warning marks the sharper shift in emphasis. The IPC projects that the number of acutely food-insecure people could rise above 1.4 million by the end of 2026, and ties that projection not to a resumption of hostilities but to shrinking humanitarian funding and narrowing access — meaning the gains recorded so far depend on flows that are themselves uncertain. A second caution concerns the kind of harm now being measured: stunting, which reflects chronic rather than acute undernutrition and carries longer-term consequences, is described as rising even as the acute indicators improve. The topic therefore stands at a point where the immediate crisis has eased while the conditions that produced it, and the resources holding it back, remain unsettled.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification is the international system used by United Nations agencies and relief organizations to grade the severity of hunger crises and to determine when a situation meets the technical threshold of famine. In August of last year it declared famine in parts of Gaza, the most severe classification in the scale, after months of deteriorating access to food during the war. A cease-fire that took effect in October 2025 reduced fighting and allowed a larger volume of humanitarian aid to enter the territory. Since then the central question has been whether that improvement can hold, given that food supply in Gaza depends almost entirely on externally funded relief operations and on the access those operations are granted. The IPC issues periodic assessments that both measure current conditions and project how they are likely to develop.
